It was 1969.
Days of Peace, Love and Hippies.
My girlfriend and I were in her orange Carmen Ghia, just cruising Central Ave. We had taken a side street to turn around and there he was. This cute little hippy guy, thumb out, looking for a ride. So...we picked him up.
He lived down the street from my place. He was 17 and I was 19. He started stopping by to visit and we went driving around in my blue VW bug with a sunroof. We drove to the top of the hill overlooking the city. We stood up through that sunroof, viewing the lights and he kissed me.
We both knew that moment that our search was over. As we drove to my place that evening, he said "We'll get married, OK?" I said "OK".
Not very romantic, but in a teenager kind of way, it was. That was August.
The next July we got married. This July we'll be married 37 years. I now have a little white VW bug. Peace sign tail lights, no sunroof. I don't think we could manage to stand up through one now anyhow, but his kisses still remind me of that warm summer night in Phoenix when we both said...OK.
