B.J. Palmer: Chiropractic's mentor

B.J. was dapper, debonair, dramatic into his 70's, decked out in vested suits, carrying a pocket watch and a gold chain. The consummate lecturer, B.J was a self-assured man of success tinged with a wee bit of wrath and resentment. His wrath focused on the medical establishment monster, against which he had fought all his life, and his resentment arose from the fact that CHIROPRACTORS did not have the level of consciousness to grasp his "Big Idea."

The power of the man was omnipresent. He would stand at the door of his lecture room, gazing down at the pocket watch in his hand, and slammed the door in the face of late-comers rushing down the hall to get to his lectures. He was not an extemporaneous lecturer, his lectures were written. He followed a script, and his so-called "canned" lectures were consistently good and he was most certainly animated but he was glued to the podium, since he followed an outline or written script.

We was, and is, a chiropractic's master. A proverb reads: "He who was once my teacher is forever my Father." As B.J. himself said, "Is a man dead if his ideals live?" B.J. Palmer was a genius far ahead of his time. No hypocrite, he practiced what he preached. The worms of nature can gnaw at decayed wood, but not at the living oak. They cannot gnaw at the living oak of his soul, his Innate. It lives on in each one of us who understand the "Bigness of the Fellow Within."

B.J. taught strictly CHIROPRACTIC, and he often made the statement that chiropractic specializes in the cause and correction of dis-ease by adjustment and should not get lost in the treatment by adjuncts. “Chiropractic is a separate and distinct specialty which may become adulterated primarily because of the extra dollar.” He believed that any chiropractor who did not understand this philosophy would be LOST.
