Thornton Troop 311 has its first Eagle Scout
On 12/3/2005
Contributed by: Kim Thuon, Troop 311 on 11/30/2005

They say, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.”  That expression would sum up the life and times of Boy Scout Troop 311’s first Eagle Scout, Ian Clanton-Thuon

Ian has been involved in Boy Scouts for nine years, beginning as a Tiger Cub 1996. In January 2004, a new Boy Scout troop was chartered to serve the Northglenn–Thornton area.  Ian was a founding member of Troop 311. The troop was small and all the boys with scouting experience were given many responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Ian served as an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Senior Patrol Leader. He also began working on those last, difficult Eagle-required merit badges. Ian was initiated into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, in May 2004.  He participated in Junior Leader Training in October 2004.

As a junior high student at Stargate School, Ian served as student liaison with Stargate’s volunteer Technology Committee. As an eighth grader, he planned and conducted his Eagle Leadership Service Project for Stargate. To assist the Technology Committee in developing its Improvement Plan, Ian proposed and managed a full-scale, detailed inventory of the School’s technology.  He worked eighty-eight hours on the project. His crew of fellow Scouts, friends and contributing adults worked an additional 142 hours. For two full days over Spring Break in 2004, Scouts and students documented every piece of computer technology in each of the 36 rooms in the school facility. Ian analyzed the results and presented recommendations for upgrades and a replacement schedule, much of which Stargate has implemented.

Ian is now a tenth grade honor student at the Denver School of Science and Technology. He joined the Tech Crew, a student organization responsible for the installation and maintenance of this new school’s top-of-the-line technology. Additionally, Ian helps work on the Yearbook, and he joined Destination ImagiNation, a creative problem solving team competition.

One of Ian’s favorite pastimes is volunteering for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. He has been active at the Museum for two years resulting in over two hundred volunteer hours.  He became the webmaster for the Museum’s ATOM teen volunteer group.  Over the summer, he had the opportunity to get involved with several brilliant scientists and computer masters, when he was asked to design a computer-generated scale 3D model of the Gates Planetarium.

On Sept. 15, nine years after joining Cub Scouts, Ian experienced the nerve-wracking and exhilarating final step on his quest to Eagle Scout – his Eagle Board of Review. An Eagle Board of Review is a comprehensive interview of a young man’s entire Scouting experience and Eagle application including six references, resume, an essay, and Leadership Service Project. Ian was extremely relieved when the Board unanimously agreed to recommend him as an Eagle Scout.

Ian’s Eagle Court of Honor, the highest ceremony in Boy Scouting, will be Dec. 3 at Stargate School.  Friends, fellow Scouts, and family from as far away as Florida joined to celebrate the positive accomplishments of this exceptional young man.
