For senior, a few more days to go for perfection

With a little luck, some determination, and a lot of health, Horizon High School graduating student Brittany Andrews has never missed a day and maintains 4.0 GPA.

As a small child, Brittany couldn't wait to start school. Every year when her cousins and playmates started complaining about having to go back school after summer break, Brittany would ask, "Is this the year I get to go? " Year after year, her mom would have to tell her no until she was finally old enough to start kindergarten. Brittany liked school so much that she was recognized every year of elementary school with "Perfect Attendance" certificates. There was never a big deal made about going to school or not going to school, Brittany just got up a went everyday, there was never a question about it.

Brittany's luck and health continued on during her days at Northeast Middle School. It was in middle school that Brittany first realized that perfect attendance was unique; she was now receiving wall plaques as recognition instead of paper certificates. Brittany noticed very few people received the plaques. In eighth grade Brittany was tripped and fell down the stairs on her way to eight hour and was taken to the nurse's office. Even though the school called for her to be picked up, Brittany continued on to Mr. Moyer's eighth hour class (even after he marked her absent), thinking she really was not hurt that bad - and later found out that she had sat through eighth hour with a broken tailbone. By the end of middle school, Brittany had received three more years of perfect attendance recognition, but had also added to it 3 years of 4.0 GPA. Brittany recently saw Mr. Moyer at Shadow Ridge and he even asked her- "How's that perfect attendance going? "

After completing nine years of school and being recognized for perfect attendance, Brittany started hearing people talk about her and her perfect attendance. She had a family friend tell her one-day as a freshman, I bet you could get a full ride scholarship for that some day- colleges want good students like that! That is when she made a conscious decision and was determined that she wanted to try for a perfect attendance scholarship. This determination was evident Brittany's junior year when she was at gymnastics practice, and according to her and coach Phil Salias "had her head somewhere other than on her shoulders where it should have been" and ended up in the emergency clinic most of the night with a broken tibula, but was determined to be at school the next day. Brittany is now completing her senior year at Horizon; she has again received recognition every year for perfect attendance and at this point continues to carry a 4.0 GPA. In addition to perfect attendance and a 4.0 GPA, Brittany has earned academic letters every two semesters throughout her high school years, as well as a varsity letter every year in gymnastics; she is a link leader, a member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society as well as a blue ribbon scholar and the vice-president of her youth group at Summit of Peace Lutheran Church. When Brittany is not in school or studying for school she enjoys shopping, movies, the gamut of water sports (skiing, wake and knee boarding) camping and spending time hanging out with her many friends.

When asked about her motivation to accomplish this, Brittany states, "early on it just happened that way. I never really planned to have this happen. I can say I'm one of the healthiest people around, I don't even know what it feels like to have the flu." She has had a cold every now and then, but doesn't think that should keep people away from school. Brittany is also cautious when she hears school is closed- she not only checks, but double checks and triple checks, because she had a cousin who knew of a senior prank at his school where students called the radio station and reported the school having a water line break and closed the school one day. A senior missed her perfect attendance by that and lost out on winning a car from a local company. When asked about senior ditch day- Brittany tells everyone- I'll probably be the only senior at school that day.

Brittany has been accepted to the University of Colorado -Colorado Springs, Bethel El School of Nursing and Health Sciences where she will major in Forensics Science. When asked about her scholarship chances- disappointingly Brittany responds, "there are no scholarships for perfect attendance, and although I have applied for what seems like a hundred other ones- I haven't been as lucky there."

Brittany has a younger brother, Dawson, who by the way is completing his first grade year this year with perfect attendance for both kindergarten and first grade. Dawson keeps saying," I want to be like my sissy- no absences".
