A two-phased approach to non-stop tolling was formally adopted Thursday (August 14) by the E-470 Public Highway Authority's board of directors. The concept of eliminating cash toll collection has been evolving and was first announced last year. Non-stop tolling will allow drivers without EXpressToll transponders to drive the toll road and be billed later.
"License Plate Toll," a non-stop alternative for current cash customers, will be introduced on January 1. The second phase of non-stop tolling will occur in July, when toll booths and automatic coin machines will be closed. Coins and paper currency will no longer be accepted.
Beginning January 1, License Plate Toll means photos will be taken of the front and rear license plates of vehicles when drivers do not choose to pay by cash and whose vehicles are not equipped with EXpressToll transponders. The registered owner of the vehicle will receive a License Plate Toll bill in the mail. Those who fail to pay their License Plate Toll bills by the due date will be subject to toll violation charges, as they are now.
Non-stop tolling is now in place on other toll roads in the U.S., Canada, and overseas. According to David Casiano, Town of Parker mayor and E-470 board chair, "Non-stop tolling will eventually be commonplace because it's safer, faster, and more convenient for toll road customers."
