THORNTON, CO...Thornton's new recycling program has been met with incredible success; residents have embraced the program and have increased their participation. In February of 2007, Thornton trash and recycle customers recycled 240 tons of materials. Just one year later, in February of 2008, that number increased to 360 tons. That number could be even higher with increased awareness of what can and cannot be recycled.
Non-recyclables are being found in Thornton's public recycle bins and can contaminate an entire bin of recyclables. "We have picked out a sink, curtain rods, lumber, five gallon paint buckets and fluorescent bulbs at the recycle bins at the Carpenter Recreation Center," says Thornton Environmental Services Manager Adam Lovato. The City of Denver and its recycle partner Waste Management recently had to remove some of their public recycle drop-off bins because people were using them as illegal dumping sites.
Smaller items can also derail the recycling process. "Plastic bags are not recyclable, but we're finding a lot of them in the bins," says Lovato. "People are using them to hold other items that are recyclable, like pop cans, but the plastic bags cause problems at the recycle center, like plugging up the fans used in the recycling process." A simple way to get around that problem is to empty the plastic bag and reuse it or take it to a grocery store. Most grocery stores now have their own drop-off bins exclusively for plastic bags.
Thornton's recycle bin at the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center has a sign that shows what products are acceptable for recycling. Thornton trash and recycle customers can also get a free copy to keep at home with their recycle bin.
