Open city letter regarding Thornton iWatch Program

TO:
Councilwoman Rebbecca Cavanaugh-Miller,
Councilwoman Beth Humenik,
Mayor Erik Hansen,
and City Manager Jack Ethredge

The iWatch program is a great program that allows the community to create a safer environment, if neighbors put in the work to do so. I also believe the program makes great use of city resources. I only have accolades for this program, and I am certain it has taken many people, many hours to get it to this point. This feedback is written in hopes of building further on the program.

With that being stated, many Thornton residents who wish to partake in the iWatch program either do not have email access or they do not have one they want to share, this ends up causing the neighbors to be very much less likely to get involved as I explain below.

On my smaller street of 9 inactive iWatch homes, 4 do not have email addresses, and two do not want to share them. They all have phone numbers they are willing to share, but I understand, that when it comes to announcing the meeting, calling each person does not scale.

While directing them to the well built iWatch website at https://extranet.cityofthornton.net/iwatch/ to sign up, it is currently required that they provide an email address in order to get involved in this program.

I would ask that some alternative be provided, as there is a need for this great program, and I feel that with the requirement of email, near to half of the residents are not being heard.

Please let me know what the alternative is and we will let the neighborhood know.

Thank You,
Brian Thornton
