On Monday, July 13 Thornton was named a "Playful City USA," one of 93 in the country. The designation is made by KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play back into children's lives. "These 93 communities created and implemented programs to positively impact childhood wellness, public safety and the quality of life," says KaBOOM's Communications Director Mike Vietti.
Thornton was selected "for its dedication to play," says Vietti, specifically for the City's Portable Playground Program which offers free recreational activities for children who do not have the opportunity to attend summer camp because of issues such as income or lack of transportation.
"We take play among our children quite seriously," says Thornton Mayor Erik Hansen. "This program honors cities and towns across the country like Thornton who are making a commitment to the importance of play and the well-being of children."
