'Idle Time': Could Cost You Your Car
Contributed by: Erika Barnard on 10/21/2005

It's bad for the environment. It's a huge risk. And, it's illegal in the City of Thornton. With colder temperatures on the way, lots of people may be ready to start a familiar routine--starting up their vehicles and letting them warm up before driving them. Known as 'puffers', these unoccupied idling vehicles provide a perfect opportunity for car theives.

The Police Department sees a significant increase in stolen vehicles during the winter--many of the cars taken were already running and warm for the car thief. City residents need to know that it is illegal to leave your vehicles running unattended.

Air pollution is already at its worse during the winter. Just add to that many vehicles just sitting and idling, and you can see how the problem of puffers just compounds our air pollution problem. So get out your gloves and cushions when you get into that cold car. You'll be helping the environment, protecting your car and obeying the law while you warm up your vehicle.

Leaving one's car running is one of the most detrimental and avoidable things we can do to our air quality. According to the EPA, leaving a car running for nine minutes will produce double the emissions than if you turned it off and restarted it. I'm sure that Hummers and other large SUVs or trucks produce that amount of harmful emissions in even less time. Yeah, it sure is nice to get into a warm and cozy car, but it's also nice to not see a dark brown cloud looming over our city on a regular basis. Being part of a larger community, we must think of those with whom we share our air quality. More important than the issue of thievery is the issue of air quality and this time of year, if you must drive, do your best to reduce your emissions!
