Candidate profile: Judy Solano
Contributed by: Judy Solano on 9/20/2006

Judy Solano is the incumbent for House District 31.

Name: Judy Solano

Age: 57

My family: Manuel Solano, husband. Married 34 years, self-employed attorney.
Jennifer Solano, daughter, age 27, works at the Legal Center for the Disabled and Seniors. Lucas Solano, son, age 25, student at C.U. Denver, school of business, served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division (served in Afghanistan).
Two stepsons and familiesand fivegrandchildren

What I do: State Representative, elected in 2004. Retired public school teacher (29 years, 5th grade).

My favorite place in town to hang out: Two places; E.B. Rains Park...it is a beautiful park with gorgeous sculptures and great playground for the kids. Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center in Thornton...great pool, work-out facilities, and community rooms.

What I like most about living here: The people are the best...hard-working families raising their children and seniors who stay involoved.

My interests and hobbies: Reading, hiking, bicycling and spending time with family.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Mini cherry cheesecakes

People who inspired me and how: My dad inspired me with his positive attitude despite his handicap. My father broke his arm when he was 15 and the doctor set the cast too tight...the result was living with an atrophied arm. He could have lived a bitter existence, but instead he rose above the obstacles and hardships to become an accomplished woodworker and basketball coach. His positive attitude has inspired many others.

How I have contributed to the community: Being a teacher for 29 years was the largest contribution to the community...touching the lives of so many children. I was also a VISTA volunteer and a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

What are the biggest issues facing the community now: There are several issues that are directly affecting our community. One, people are struggling financially... it is harder and harder to make ends meet. Wages are stagnant and yet, the cost of living has continued to climb. Second, the affordability and accessiblity of health care is a major concern. There are many who simply can not afford the cost of of health care. Those who are covered are finding the cost of premiums increasing while their coverage decreasing. Prescription drug costs are also skyrocketing. Third, the high forelosure rates in Adams County are the highest in the nation. This is due partly from the irresponsible lending practice by lending institutions, but it is also a reflection of the struggles of working families.
