My name:
Rex Pierce
Age:
Recently turned 44
My family:
My wife
Nanci
and I have been married for 21 years and we have three sons -
Nick
,16;
Zach
,12 and
Sam
,10. We also proudly serve our Gecko - Gex, and our newest addition Bailey, a Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie mix.
What I do:
First, I am the father of my children and the husband of my wife. I am also the Vice President of Northern Lights Little League, where I coached two teams last season. I am also involved in other area youth sports programs and in North Metro Church. To pay the bills, I am a unionized switch foreman for the BNSF Railway.
My favorite place in town to hang out:
Northern Lights Little League Complex watching kids play or practice baseball or football. Even better then watching the organized sports is watching the kids put together pick up games on their own.
What I like most about living here:
Everything! I like the seasons, I like being cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon in spring and fall. I even like trying to practice baseball in March. I enjoy the occasional cold spell in winter and the heat in summer. I like being able to ski all day and be home for dinner. I like the fact that we have something like 500 campgrounds and I want to stay at everyone. I like that we have 14ers and plains where the horizon is still 100 miles away. We have sky scrappers and school districts with 30 kids. Most of all, we have adventures yet to be had.
My interests and hobbies:
Teaching and coaching kids, cycling, skiing, football, baseball, basketball, hockey (ok just about every sport there is), Men's ministries, camping, hiking . . . life
What is my favorite thing to cook:
Just about anything on the grill.
People who inspired me (and how):
My father and
Teddy Roosevelt
, guts and boldness. My high school history teacher - she taught me to love history and the lessons there in. My college football coaches;
Jim Sweeney
- He would speak in front of 100 players and you knew he was talking to you and you alone;
Willie Robinson
(last I heard the defensive back coach with the Steelers) - he epitomized intensity.
Now a days, the thousands of troops serving in our armed services, whether in Iraq or elsewhere around the world, inspire me. For love of country, for little pay, and no glory, they stand in harms way, risking life and limb, giving up years of family time. Their sacrifice humbles me. They are worthy of admiration.
How I have contributed to the community:
Hours and hours of time with Northern Lights Little League, and with North Metro Church and with Thornton boys basketball, as a substitute teacher with Adams 12 Schools and as a football coach with Centaurus High School. I have given the kids, especially the boys, a positive role model. I have given them the opportunity to be boys, allowed them to grow to be young men, shown them how to be leaders of families, and communities, and soon legislatures.
What are the biggest issues facing community now:
Let me start by saying that I support legal immigration 100 percent. This country lets in over one million immigrants legally every year and that's a very good thing. There are waiting lists to get here legally (15 years is the wait in Hong Kong). I invite anyone from any culture to come here legally and become American, to even influence our culture and make a name for him or herself.
That being said, without a doubt, our most pressing issue is illegal immigration. The negative impacts of illegal immigration affect every other issue we face.
Health care costs - It drives them up, you are paying for their care.
Schools - It drives up costs and creates all kinds of high dollar program requirements.
Transportation - Hundreds if not thousands of uninsured drivers are on the streets.
Public safety - By coming here illegally, they demonstrate a disrespect for our laws and traditions throughDUI's, gangs, and a large criminal element.
Economic - Underground economies mean taxes not collected. Wages are depressed, and entry level employment for our high schoolers harder to come by.
We fix the illegal immigration problem and a lot of our other problems go away or are significantly reduced.
