Thornton holds its first ever Water Saving Champions Family Field Day on August 23. "It's a celebration for all our citizens who have cut back on their water use and saved millions of gallons of water," says Thornton Water Resources Analyst Laura Wing. The ongoing Water Drive, "A Little Goes a Long Way," encourages citizens to become water-saving champions by saving 10 gallons of water each day. "So far over 600 residents have taken the pledge and collectively they'll save an estimated 2,109,000 gallons of water a year," says Wing.
Thornton residents are invited to celebrate our City's water saving efforts on Saturday, August 23 from noon -2 p.m. at Thornton's Community Park located at York Street and Thornton Parkway. All Thornton residents are invited to come and enjoy the event, with special recognition for the water-saving champions. Mix 100.3 will be broadcasting live and free food will be provided.
Events for the family fun day include:
- an inflatable relay race
- giant tricycle races
- bungee run race
- a "running water mascot"
- potato sack race
- dunk tank
- a gift card raffle, and prizes for the race winners.
Thornton's water-saving campaign is an effort to raise awareness about the need for water conservation in Thornton and provide practical ways to conserve water outdoors and indoors.
For instance did you know you can save water by :
- Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving can save two gallons of water a minute.
- Keeping your shower to five or less minutes can save about 30 gallons of water a day.
- Checking regularly for leaks in indoor and outdoor water fixtures and repairing them as soon as possible.
- Running your washing machine when it's fully loaded.
- Using the shortest wash cycle for everyday loads of laundry.
- Using a broom instead of the hose when cleaning driveway, patios and sidewalks.
- Taking your car to a commercial car wash that recycles water instead of washing it with a hose at home.
- Replacing older toilets and clothes washers with new water-efficient models. Check out the City rebates at
