FLY FISHING BENEFITS SURVIVORS
Contributed by: Deborah Erickson on 9/7/2007

Spending a weekend by a rushing river in the Rockies is invigorating at any time. However, it is especially meaningful when the weekend is hosted by Casting for Recovery and you are a breast cancer survivor.

Casting for Recovery is a national non-profit organization that serves women who have or have had breast cancer. CFR provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been affected by this disease to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn fly fishing. Lives are enhanced by mental and physical healing, shared experiences and the hope that comes from learning a new skill.

I was fortunate to attend a retreat this past Labor Day weekend at the beautiful North Fork Ranch near Bailey, Colorado. Fourteen of us--all breast cancer survivors ranging in age from the mid-thirties to seventy--were treated to beautiful accommodations, scrumptious food, generous hospitality, and professional fly fishing instruction. In addition, we were each healed and helped when we were able to discuss our triumphs and concerns with other women who had all walked down the same path.

Most in the group had never fly fished before, and I'm not sure that any of our skills ever advanced much past the novice rank, but after many hours of lecture and hands-on practice, we were all ready and excited to step into the water on the final day of the retreat. This adventure was made even more special because each of us had the services of an expert volunteer fisherman who stood right next to us while we fished. They guided us every step of the way as we fished the beautiful North Fork of the South Platte River, groaning when a fish got away and cheering along with us when we landed a big one.

Any Colorado woman who has experienced breast cancer can apply to attend a Colorado Casting for Recovery retreat. Fourteen women (plus alternates) are chosen for each retreat by random selection. I applied for three years before I was chosen, but I'm glad I kept trying for this was certainly an experience I will long remember.
