This "Dean" needs Jerry Lewis' sense of humor ASAP
Contributed by: Darren Oliver on 9/17/2007

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING goes the bell as the students swarm the already crowded hallways. As the young adults have a mass exit from their educational environment we hear cheers, screams, and hoorays (and it's only the end of first period). As the smoke clears, there we are...the protectors of the youth, the providers of education, the clearers of the smokers' path. We are the Deans of students. Many of the students smile at us, some hi-5 us, some tremble just from the sight of us, and some even want to make a lunch run for us.

Each school day the Deans are asked to do ONE job, make sure these future leaders of our society are safe at school. We do have other areas of concern such as: Make sure they are in class, make sure they can focus in class eventhough their boy/girlfriend just broke up with them, make sure there aren't any drugs/weapons on the students, etc. But our main focus is to help maintain a safe school environment with 2,100+ students per day. This is not an easy task, but my first college professor warned me that public education isn't easy.

The four "hand-picked" Deans show up daily to uncertainty. We do know that rather we are ready or not, the students will be there. 95% of the time we enjoy what we do, the other 5% of the time we look at eachother in disbelief and rapidly pool our money for the next Powerball. Most of the day our job is designed that we know as many students possible and help "guide" all the population. There is a part of the job that we commonly refer to as "The Mud". The mud consist of the time you are dealing with students making bad decisions and we are there to handout their consequence. After awhile being the "hammer" can take a toll on a human, but as the old saying goes, "It's just all in a days work".

As the spokesperson/typer for the Deans, I don't necessarily feel that we "deserve" a suite in Coors Field. I do however feel that we "need" the suite to get out of the "mud" and enjoy and evening of fun with friends and family.
