My terrifying account of 'The Strangers'
Contributed by: S.L. Carlsen on 6/16/2008

It's a completely free and uneventful day for me. My kids are somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise with their grandparents. My husband is working out of town. I decide it's a good day to go see a movie at the new Orchard 12 theaters. I'm enjoying this time by myself with no responsibilities, so I look up the times for movies online. I wanted to see "What happens in Vegas" but the only showing is tonight at 10pm. I've already seen most of the other movies so I settle on The Strangers.

I'm smiling as I get my ticket and walk into the theater. I make myself comfortable in my chair at the very top, right in the middle. A perfect seat for me. There is absolutely nobody else in the theater. That doesn't bother me at all, I certainly don't mind being alone. I'm actually savoring the moment.

Then, the movie starts and tells me it's based on true events. It goes on to say how the FBI claims there are about 1.4 million violent crimes in America every year. About twenty minutes into the movie, I'm so terrified I don't know if I'll make it through. Either I'm going to end up getting killed by some lunatic or I'm going to have a heart attack. My feet are pulled up under me, I keep my hands over my eyes and peek out through my fingers at the empty seating. I'm just waiting for someone to pop up in front of me with a scary mask on, just like in the movie.

This poor couple (Liv Tyler) and her boyfriend (Scott Speedman) are being terrorized in their home by three psychotic killers in very scary masks. With the loud thumping, screaming, sudden appearances of these people out of nowhere, I'm wishing for it all to just be over. I love a scary movie, but this went way beyond that for me! I don't know if it was because I was all alone in there, or if it's because these things can really happen.

When that movie was over, I prayed that I would make it down the steps and out of the dark theater alive. Somehow I made it out, and I stopped next door to get a massage. I figure I deserved it after going through all that terror. At this point, I just can't imagine it being a true story. It says it happened in 2005, and they apparently didn't catch these psychos, so I don't think they would make a movie about them while they are still out there. Who knows that this movie wouldn't make them mad and cause them to go terrorize another family. It's time for me to search the internet and confirm this isn't a true story, so that I can hopefully sleep tonight!

This movie gets an A for being a great thriller!
