The absence of LEARNING STANDARDS contributes directly to the lowering of teaching standards. Combined with a GOAL of STUDENT-SELF-ESTEEM, ultimately lead to low teacher expectations of what students SHOULD DO and what they CAN DO. "Low expectations are ALWAYS met."
Other countries have STRONG curriculums and HIGH and UNCOMPROMISING standards. Other countries also have students who learn more and test better.
When the real goal becomes to "MAKE" the STUDENTS "FEEL-GOOD" about "THEMSELVES" our kids do very poorly. It should be; it NEEDS TO BE: "What will PEOPLE think? & "What can I do?" & "Look for work."
With diminished COMPETITION, inflated grades, and praising kids in the absence of achievement leads to a "dumbing down" of student as well as teacher performance. Get tough. Don't be their friend. BE THE TEACHER!
Schools CAN not have goals of generating self-esteem. These goals lead to an evasion of the need for mastery. That is a "BAD-LIFE LESSON." I want them to view school as a place to WORK HARD and they STAY until they get it. THAT IS, preparation for succeeding in a demanding, competitive world.
"All children can learn. We push high standards. This is because we SPITE poverty; We SPITE racism; WE SPITE parental neglect."
