Have we forgotten our ABC's and 123's?
Contributed by: Dr. Sein Reif D.C. on 1/31/2007

Myself, and my Chiropractic practice, have been a corporate citizen of Thornton for over 12 years.

I've been in Thorton since the days of Mayor Margarette and Dave Bata. Back when people from the city actually paid a friendly visit just to see how your business was doing. When our front door was knocked out for 6 weeks this summer by a run-away car, our patients rallied behind us to keep us in business. Thank you.

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) refers to a set of perspectives and strategies that emphasize the importance of mapping and mobilizing the existing strengths of struggling neighborhoods. The approaches have been successfully adapted to suburban and rural areas as well as the inner-city.

ABCD proposes that communities contain basic assets:

#1: Skills and capacities of the residents.
#2: Local volunteer associations.
#3: Public, private, and nonprofit resources.
#4: Physical resources such as land, buildings, and water.
#5: Local economic activity.

The process of development involves discovering, mapping these assets, strengthening connections between them and mobilizing their synergy to achieve a community's vision.

In these cases, local community builders have improved their communities. Skill surveys enable elders, new immigrants, people with disabilities and youth into the mainstream community life. Schools, libraries and parks have discovered that the contributions of their neighbors can strengthen their own missions. The asset-focused, inside-out approach is a necessary perspective for successful community building.

We may have been the "red-headed" stepchild at 104th & Colorado because we have been here for 30 years and been weathered and redeveloped. But the families our small businesses support have been pillars of the community for all these years. We may not be the "pretty penny" but we are determined to provide excellent service with the experience have been around the block.
