Organizational Culture
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 7/2/2007

Although defined in many ways, organizational culture is thought of as the set of ASSUMPTIONS, knowledge, GUIDING PRINCIPLES, values, MENTAL MODELS, orienting symbols, and INTERPRETATIONS that inform the daily operation of organizations such as corporations, government offices, or volunteer organizations. It is the perceived CORRECT WAY to cope, think and feel in relation to problems. It maintains a COLLECTIVE IDENTITY and a set of MEANINGS.

Whether a Boy Scout troop with 12 members, a college with thousands of students, or a corporation with tens of thousands of employees, and organization develops a distinctive culture. Japanese businesses give more attention to creating a culture of commitment to tasks that support their manufacturing mission. New employees are taught the firm's culture and rewarded for embracing the accepted practice and values of the corporation. These values are often reinforced with stories about the significant episodes in the firm's history, especially concerning adversity overcome by a heroic founder of the organization.

Leaders are thought to be the product of a strong culture. These leaders reinforce their values by rites and celebrations marking achievement of significant goals and underscore the importance of loyalty to the organization. Because people often resist rapid change, organizational cultures change slowly. People find it useful for describing the strengths and weaknesses of the organization in which most people spend their lives learning and working within sets of expectations and practices.

I think back to my highschool, colleges, organizations, jobs, and career that have set principles, tenants, philosophies that have carried me through dark times and uplifted and inspired me to set and achieve goals. My colleagues and FRIENDS within these cultures share and celebrate my success as I do theirs.

As far as he is capable, he strives to personify his ideal; Bearing misfortune with dignity and holding no grudge against any man. The farm boy had shaped himself into the Universal model of a gentleman. Easy of manner, he places the correct value on himself and everything about him. He wears a pleasant expression that hides private feelings. He talks freely and agreeably, but he does not babble. He greets the distinguished and the humble with equal respect.
