Woman protests new Wal-Mart in Thornton
Contributed by: Ange Cobb on 9/19/2006

Council people,

I am writing this email in complete desperation. I just purchased my home 2 months ago at 128th & Oneida, one block away from the planned build site of Wal-Mart. Words cannot express the frustration, fear, devastation and horror I, as well as many others feel because of this decision to allow such an "Non-Thornton" business to make camp literally in our back yards. So many of us feel slighted and jaded because we had NO IDEA that the area at 128th & Quebec had been re-zoned commercial let alone that Wal-Mart had been granted the rites to build there.

The builders that are showing off their beautiful model homes are not sharing this dirty little secret, no one appears to be. Why has this very important detail been kept so "secret?" This is important to us, very important. Do any of you live out here? I hope that you considered that when you made your decisions. This is so scary to us - we don't even know how to respond or where to begin. This seems so sneaky and a little suspicious, what is the hurry? There are two gigantic retail developments going up along the I25 corridor, surely those sites and tax credits represent a huge amount of revenue to the bottom line. Doesn't the needs and feelings of the people that voted you in mean anything? This is more than property values, this is the safety of our children, this is the comfort of our lives - how would it had affected your decisions had you had semi trucks barreling up and down the street, street - not highway, behind your home?

Will one of you please, please respond to me. Respond to us. I am the voice of many - I am on disability and at home with lots of time on my hands that many of my neighbors do not have. I am committed to this endeavor and I will not stop until our voices are heard. We feel that we have been deceived from the very beginning with a misleading ballot and we are not going to stand quiet any longer. We have attorney's on our side that are going to help us pro-bono, we have people that won the fight from the Hunter's Glen project that are on our side helping as well. We are also going to the builders in this area to find out their position on Wal-Mart and since this will GREATLY impact their sales I can only imagine what DR Horton and Richmond will say when we alert them to our mobilization.

Council people of Thornton, perhaps you didn't realize there were so many residence here that didn't want Wal-Mart in our back yard, perhaps because the ballot was confusing and led you to believe we wanted it that it also made you vote for the project. I can tell you, scream from the highest mountain in our beautiful state that it simply isn't true. We DO NOT WANT WALMART, not here, not in our precious community.

I respectfully ask for your response today, we ask for only a re-vote, we ask to put this on the ballot in November so that we can ask the residence again, in a clear and understandable way. You will then get your answer, you will then see how the tax paying people in your district feel about this project. We will not rest until we are heard and our wishes are made known.

Thank you and sincerely,
Ange Cobb

Jeff,
Please have someone contact Ms. Cobbs and tell her about the process that occurred and the vote of the people.
Thanks.
Mayor Busck

-----------------------------------------------------

Mr Mayor,
I am aware of the "vote of the people." The problem is, that vote was confusing, according to sooo many people that I have spoken to they voted no and as it turns out their No vote meant yes, very handy for you. Also - lots and lots of us did NOT live out here when that vote was cast. It occurred long before ground was even broken out next to the build site. Now that many of us have settled in we feel jaded, there is still a for sale sign on the build site, there is no Future Home of Wal-Mart sign out there! How dare you continue to deceive unsuspecting home buyers?! How dare DR Horton and Richmond continue to sell homes and plots of land without informing people that that is what is going to happen in that field?! You should all be very, very ashamed of yourselves! I never, never would have purchased this house had I known and I asked! I asked what was going to be there! And still today there is nothing telling the naive potential buyers what is going to be erected in the field across from all of these residential communities. I say poo poo on your vote Noel Busck. That's right, you do not deserve to be called mayor in my opinion, after all you haven't acted for the people out in these communities and your leaving office in a few months anyway so what do you care. Shame on you, shame on you. All I can hope is that some day you too get jade and tricked like you've done to the lot of us out in this area. That a huge, horrible corporate fat cat moves into your back yard and makes your comfortable life unsafe and dangerous like you've done to all of us out here.

Unrespectable yours,
Mrs. Cobb

Explain to me why the council would approve a huge monstrosity like Wal-mart in an area that is surrounded on THREE SIDES by single family homes? The city approved this KNOWING that the lives of the families on all sides of this building would be affected, which is just shameful. As for Mr. Quelch's statement, he clearly missed the part where Ms. Cobbs stated that the homebuilders denied any such commercial stores. I was told by RIchmond that the area was going to be used for housing. Imagine my surprise AFTER I bought my home! My father was a city Councilmember and a mayor, so I have first-hand experience with city politics, and I can say that what the Thornton city council and mayor did was completely shameful.

I believe the principle of Caveat Emptor applies here. It is the duty and responsibility of the purchaser to determine whether or not the home and it's environment meets their needs. I would like to add that the City needs the sales tax revenue that these stores will provide. The NIMBY folks succeeeded in preventing an earlier Wal-Mart proposal at 128th/I-25, which would have been a better site than the current 128th/Quebec, but them's the breaks. It will be a complete travesty if this new Wal-Mart proposal goes down the tubes too...
