Mapleton Public Schools needs watchdog
Contributed by: Jay Baca on 11/2/2007

Dear Your Hub Editor,

I wanted to post an on going problem with Mapleton Public Schools in the Thornton Area. The problem is bullying and sexual misconduct by children with other children at the following schools: Clayton Partnership and Explorer Elementary.

I have had several incidents and history with the school's denial and covering up of incidents and coerceing statements from children using their authority status and general trust with the children by using simple child psychology to their benefit, and in some cases, they even have asked the parents to leave the room while they interrogate children complaining of being assaulted by other children. Then when they emerge from the office their story has changed. Here is just a small list of some of the incidents that has happened to me.

One of my children nearly had her finger severed off by another child wielding scissors. There was an investigation. They disciplined the teacher and nothing was done to the other child. (no charges filed) The boy who did it admitted to the incident outside of the school system and agreed to pay the $1,700 hospital bill...to this day I have not received a dime.

The boy's father told me over the phone The Principle at Skyview advised him to handle the situation outside of the school because it would ruin the boy's academic reputation. While my daughter was bleeding in a trash can for three hours, I was not called and the school nurse did not report it. On her lunch break, she (my daughter) was rushed to the emergency room and received stitches on the inside and outside of her finger, a total of seventeen.

My youngest daughter, has been sexual assaulted by a neighborhood boy and because of his age at that time those incidents occured, he could not be charged and also the Dept. of Social Services would not get involved because a member of their family would have to be the one who reported the incident. So my three daughters had to be prisoner of their own homes for three years. Now the boy is of age to be charged. When I discovered this same boy was in the same class room as my daughter this year I alerted the Principle at Clayton Partnership School in Thornton. She replied that she cannot discuss other children with me. I explained I understand, I am just making you aware of incidents involving this child.

In the past he has broken into our house and put his hand down one of my daughters pants while she was sleeping and made penetration. Because he was eight years old, their was no charges by the police. After many preventive measures, this same child would sneak into my yard and do property damage and also make more sexual contact by force with my two youngest daughters in their back yard by him jumping five fences. I thought this would be important information for any child that attended Clayton Partnership School.

After my daughter was attacked by the same child and received a very big bump on her head, I again went and complained to the school. Neither the school or the police dept. did anything. The police dept simply went and had a talk with the boys parents.......still no charges ?

Then shortly after that incident, two eleven-year-old girls were playing with my daughter at my home and explained to me that the same boy had attempted to and had made unwanted sexual contact with other children and them. I called their parents and one of the girls parents was to meet with me at the school to complain. The girls mother did not show up. The girl willingly with myself and my daughter attempted to go report the incident and instead a playground monitor (the one who never reports incidents according to the kids) made a huge episode. I sadly was charged with disorderly conduct for attempting to alert the school of a known child with serious mental health problems who understands by the police dept and public schools that it's ok to touch inappropriately and harm others.

Finally, a good cop charged the boy after another incident with harassment. My little girl had to be taken to the emergency room. When the swelling went down, she has to undergo a cat scan because the emergency room Dr. believed the same boy hit her so hard the bone in her cheek is chipped. However the principle at Clayton Partnership sent me, a letter stating the incident was unsubstantiated. There is a restraining order in affect now but if there are any parents who would like to talk about their problems and support me in making a safer environment at Mapleton Public Schools by constructing a community watch dog, I would like to hear from them. This is nothing new in any of the schools. My kids go to Adams 12 and my youngest was bullied all last year and the kid doing it was told say your sorry. the last straw was when he bit her in front of a teacher, who actually said it's allright he didn't break the skin. The schools are not following the anti-bulling rules in their own rules and regulations. You have to force them to follow them. Like writing down every incident on the playground at recess.I think Colorado parents from all over who have students assaulted should file a class action lawsuit. Maybe then they will start following their own regulations.
