Some institutions are eager to call attention to their successful members and colleagues who do great things. It's good to spotlight success and people who made the right choices; people who were rewarded with success and a HIGH REPUTATION. We also establish a "HALL OF SHAME" for those who bring dishonor to our institutions.
We should all know the GOLDEN RULE - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It is a good rule for ethical values and a moral standard in all religions, cultures, countries, and societies. People know that it IS POSSIBLE to succeed in business AND maintain your moral values and that ethical behavior helps ensure success in the LONG RUN.
I believe that people involved in PUBLIC SERVICE as volunteers instills perspective and values and ethics. It helps us to exercise commitments that go beyond ourselves. The leaders of tomorrow must develop their moral muscle that will help stay on the path within the lines of good values and proper behavior - even when we are pushed up against these boundaries. We need to BE these leaders.
As business leaders we have an opportunity to create a better standard. Progress is possible. Tomorrow can be better than today. We can successfully resist these pressures. Strong ethics can help free enterprise THRIVE and OPPORTUNITY flourish. We live in a culture where opportunity does exist, where the rewards can be great.
"Not everything that counts can be counted." It is hard to measure honesty, and trustworthiness. But we know that for liberty and justice and opportunity to be lasting, we must have INTEGRITY.
