Thornton Veteran's Memorial Foundation
Contributed by: Marty Wisniewski on 8/14/2007

This letter was origanally submitted on April 6, 2007

The Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation was created to build a Veterans Park in the City of Thornton. A citizen's grassroots group was founded on doing something good for the community. A group that is setting lofty goals and a group that found help in the city of Thornton and found partners in the Colorado State Legislature.

The Park will be dedicated to remember the members of our armed services - past, present and future. If you think about it, everyone knows someone personally who served our country, a friend, a relative, a co-worker. Their service has defined our country. We have sent them to places we would fear to go. Some have returned touched by war, broken in mind and body and some have paid the ultimate price. All they ask from us is to remember them, to help them and to honor their service. They have never failed us, but perhaps we have at times forgotten them.

The Thornton Veterans Memorial Foundation is prepared to always remember and honor the men and woman of our armed services. The Foundation has created a legislative group chaired by Mike Coffman, Secretary of State, with members Senator Lois Tochtrop, and Representatives Judy Solano, Edward Casso, John Soper, Tony Hake, Chairman of the Foundation, Terri Cooper mother of Thomas Slocom (the first Coloradoan who died in Iraq) and myself, as the representative for the City of Thornton.

The Legislative Group is charged with promoting the Foundation at the State and Local Government level. In that vain, Representative John Soper and Senator Lois Tochtrop have introduced House Joint Resolution 07-1028, concerning Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Funding for Veterans Memorials and Monuments, asking the GOCO Board of Directors to consider allowing GOCO funds to be available to Veterans Memorials. The Resolution has overwhelming support in both legislative chambers.

Being an American, I am never surprised that when a cause is good and just, we can come together. We can supersede politics and find a way of getting things done. Lofty goals make Thornton great. Citizens like you and I are what make those lofty goals a reality; I plead with every Thornton citizen to become involved in our community and help make our community a better place. Keep your eye open for information on the up-coming press conference at Thornton's Veterans Memorial Park this month, I hope to see you there.

Thank you

I saw the Thornton Veterans Memorial Dedication on Channel 2 news last night. I understand that you are the key founder of this wonderful Foundation. Congrats on another great idea.
