COMMUNITY PUBS
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 5/31/2007

The public bar in America has often been referred to as the poor man's social club. While it is true that working-class bars are the most regularly attended, there are also bars that serve as the after-work socialization stops for groups of workers such as lawyers, hospital employees, schoolteachers, journalists, and professors, and students.

American bars have improved their image and their décor, expanding their food fare, and becoming responsible for their serving of adult beverages. In villages that have these pubs, locals meet and talk. Informally, taverns are news centers and news from other areas is gleaned from visitors.

However, because many of our neighbors prefer the warmth and friendliness of the tavern to the atmosphere of the church, a great many regulations and controls have been imposed upon the bars. Government agencies regard bars and drinking and the consequences of alcohol consumption as negative and cause social problems. There is scarce recognition that Pubs & Bars form a community-building function.
