Trends toward New Urbanism
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 5/2/2008

Many communities and neighborhoods are aspiring to greater heights with higher densities, high quality design, and broad ranges of culture and amenities. Thornton, and surrounding neighborhoods are evolving into this pattern, as many Homesteads have abandoned yard and maintenance duties for the convenience of town homes.

After 50 years of placing the automobile at the center of planning, we turn to planning with the person in mind. Narrower streets, cozy neighborhood parks, and small Mom and Pop shops. When people and their culture are at the center, unique and authentic development can be fostered.

Individualism is the culture to today. This determines the depth and width of our relationships. Individualism and community building have an inverse relationship. Only one can flourish; at the expense of the other.

The PIONEERS could survive because the objective was to build a Homestead and acquire PERSONAL PROPERTY. Now, we are faced with the task of building a COMMUNITY and a SOCIETY. This means INTER-dependence, INTER-connectedness, and INTE-gration.

People make up the community and people enter into relations with others within and outside their community through the family, church, social relation, and WORK. Commercial establishments can be communities for those who work and consume in them. Work defines community for most people.
