The Denver Highlanders Rugby Football Club will be taking on their arch rivals, theDenver Barbarians at Wyco Park in Northglenn (11551 Wyco Drive) on Saturday, September 9 at 1:00 & 3:00. The Highlanders will be putting their 2006 USA Division 1 Sweet Sixteen reputation on the line as well as their National Top 10 ranking. Our battles with the Barbos are legendary, and frequently, this game has decided the eventual Easter Rockies Rugby Football Union season championship.
We are anxious to hit the pitch and perform within a HOME crowd of supporters, and share our form of high paced, continuous phase rugby action. Many of our alumni live in the Thornton - Northglenn community, and we welcome the team support.
Rugby is an internationally popular game played by men, and women, boys and girls, in over 100 countries of the world. The game involves 15 players a side, disciplined by 1 referee in 40 minute halves seperated by a 5 minute half time. The players do not wear helmets, but some may wear minimal padding, but definitely the game is FULL CONTACT.
The object of the game is to score points by carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball in the TRY ZONE. Grounding the ball, which must be done with downward pressure, results in a try (5 points). After a try, a conversion is attempted by a place kick or drop kick directlyfrom the spot of the score. It the ball passes over the bar and between the posts, the conversion is worth 2 points. Points may also be scored from a penalty kick (3 points) from the spot of the foul, or a drop kick any where in play through the goal is worth 3 points.
The ball may not be passed forward (though it may be kicked forward.) Only the players with the ball can be tackled, and there is no blocking. The play is like soccer only in that the play is continuous and only stops when the ball goes out of bounds, an infringement, or a SCORE. When the ball goes out into TOUCH, it is thrown back in at a LINE-OUT where the FORWARDS line up and jump for the ball. A minor infringement may result in a SCRUM, where the opposing forwards bind together as a unit and push against their opponents (8 on 8) trying to win the ball with their feet.
ONLY 5 substitutions are allowed per game and there is no seperate offence or defense units. The fitness, skill, and teamwork is as graceful procession as any army marching down a field of battle, imposing their will upon the enemy.
We invite all youth, high school athletes who may like the excitement of full contact sport with professional skill level. The general public is invited. There is no admission fee. The fans are free to roam the sidelines and follow the action with the best seat in the house. If you don't understand, one of our rugby regulars or alumni will enlighten to the rules, or the score. The game will be played rain or shine.
Join us after the games, to meet the players and autographs for the youngsters.

America’s love affair with RUGBY is growing. Whether you are a “WEEKEND WARRIOR” or a seasoned “PROFESSIONAL”, it is important to be mindful of simple measures that will improve your game and overall health. Develop a consistent ritual of WARM-UP STRETCHES to follow both on and off the pitch. Practice a combination of abdominal and lower back exercises to improve balance and posture, which is important in the scrum down, lineout, and counter attack. Get professional coaching-training guidance from time to time to improve balance, endurance, and reflexes to match your changing physical capabilities.
