People from a wide range of social groups are attracted to sport. Some participate in competitive activities (rugby). Some root for the favorite team (Highlanders) and athletes. Its potential to draw people together and express their common sentiments is powerful. Sport contributes to social integration and community building.

Sports regenerates a sense of civic pride, contributes to the health and safety of the community. The motivation for connecting sport and community is the quest for recognition and is often backed by government, business, or both. For example, even in small towns, local chamber of commerce may sponsor signs announcing the town is the "Home of the Champions."

Sport is a preserve where traditional displays of masculinity are celebrated.
