Highlander Rugby victorious in Div-1 opener

The Denver Highlanders opened their 2006-7 Division 1 campaign in Missouri with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 30-15 victory against hosts Kansas City RFC.

Having warmed up with creditable results against Super League opponents K.C Blues, an 18-14 win, and a tense 13-13 draw with cross-town rivals the Barbarians, the Highlanders approached the game with confidence having made some additions to their squad in the off-season, notable pivot Leif Gibson from Boulder.

Unseasonably warm temperatures added to the hot reception the Highlanders received from the kick-off with K.C's forwards dominating the first half hour and out-muscling their opponents for a 15-3 lead. However, with the KC fullback in the sin bin, the Highlanders clawed their way back into the game with a Gibson penalty, a McQuade try and Gibson conversion made for a 15-13 halftime scoreline.

A further penalty saw Denver edge ahead 16-15 and as the game opened up, Denver added two converted tries by Nelson and Clancy for a final of 30-15. "All credit to a fired-up, physical K.C side, they had their foot on our throat at the half-hour mark but we showed admirable character to rally for 27 unanswered points on the road", said Highlander coach Steve Lewis.

Previous results in this Western RFU, Northern Division saw Kansas City defeat the GOATS from Omaha 35-15, and Aspen dominate Boulder 55-14. Next up, the Highlanders welcome Aspen to theWyco Park in Northglenn for a friendly followed by league matches in Omaha and again at Wyco for Boulder RFC.
