HIGHLANDERS RUGBY SLOW OUT OF THE 2007 GATE
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 3/7/2007

2007's first AWAY outing was grim one for the Highlanders with the A-side shellacked by the Barbarians 52-6 and the B-side faring even worse.

With our traditional rivals having retooled in the off-season they had seven Eagles on the field and two games under their belt. The Highlanders had only one practice outside and so perhaps the result was not unexpected even if the extent of the score was. But no excuses, poor tackling, tentativeness at the breakdown, lack of match fitness and a lineout that misfired all day ALL contributed to a poor performance. The upside is these are all eminently fixable and WILL BE FIXED.

The positives? The set scrum held up well, Ryan Diehl was comfortable in his new role as full-back, Leif Gibson kicked well and Tim Guerra, as ever, defended well. New #8 Mark Bokhoven had little opportunity to showcase his undoubted talents.

For the B's Brendan Clancy had a fine game and Mike Simpson and Mike Dellere also worked hard. The newseason will restart on Tuesday night in our last twilight practice before the Daylight Savings Time.

Next game: March 10 - University of Wyoming RFC
