Thornton Masters Swim Team, which trains out of the Carpenter Recreation Center in the City of Thornton, finished 4 th at the 2008 Colorado Masters Short Course Championships and Breadbasket Zone Championships. The team was represented at the 3-day event by 30 swimmers ranging from 22 to 69 years of age. There were 35 teams at the meet, with some teams coming from as far away as Arizona, Missouri, Massachusetts and Wyoming to compete in the Zone Championships.
As one of the largest home grown teams in the metro north area with over 70 swimmers, Thornton was able to use its team size to finish in 4 th place. This is the highest finish for Thornton Masters at the State Championships since they changed the championship format from a small, medium, and large team championship several years ago to an open format pitting teams of all sizes head to head. The teams that end up earning the most points, regardless of size, take the top spots on the podium. Thornton was competing with teams that had two times as many swimmers at the meet and was still able to stay competitive and finish in fourth place, just ahead of Durango Masters in 5th and behind Inverness in 3 rd, Bee Gees Swimming in 2 nd, and The DU Aquaholics in 1 st.
Individual State Champions at the meet were Mathew Brown in the 100 breaststroke in the 18-24 age group and George Downs in the 100 breaststroke and 50 butterfly in the 65-69 age group. Also bringing home a State Championship title was the men's 18+ age group, 200 freestyle relay, featuring Matthew Brown, Kevin Juliano, Jared Foster, and Bill Roth. Not to be outdone, the women's 45+ age group, 200 medley relay also won a state title, featuring swimmers Shelly Miller, Jeanne Stokoe, Barbara Kaufman and Carol Craft.
Thornton Masters is comprised of competitive swimmers, triathletes, and fitness swimmers of all ages (18 and older). Many of the team members do not compete, but actively participate with the team to take advantage of the coached workouts that provide structure and focus on improving swimming technique.
