Contributed by: San Diego State University on 10/10/2006

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Horizon High School graduate and Thornton resident Nick Cardenas has been called up for the U.S. Under-20 National Team camp from Oct. 8-12 in Sunrise, Fla. Cardenas was one of six collegiate players called up to the camp and joined the team late Sunday night.

Cardenas currently plays at San Diego State University.

"This is one of the special moments in coaching where it makes you so proud to witness a young man achieve his goals," SDSU men's soccer head coach Lev Kirshner said. "It's such a well-earned honor for Nick as he has been fabulous for us all season."

Cardenas has started all 11 games he has appeared in 2006 and is third on the team with three goals and tied for third with six points.

Of the 16 players on the roster, seven play professionally in Major League Soccer (including D.C. United's Freddy Adu) and three play professionally oversees.

The camp will include a closed-door match against the Haiti U-23 team on Oct. 11.
