Three University of Northern Colorado wrestlers earned a pin Sunday evening, as the Bears picked up their first home dual-meet victory of the season, 46-3 over Portland State.
"The tough schedule we've had has prepared us well," said
Bears head coach Jack Maughan
, whose team improved to 4-6 in duals this season. "We wrestled well today, and we were dominant in our matches."
No. 14
Kenny Hashimoto
(Thornton) (17-2, 7-1 duals) continued his recent tear, pinning
Greg Einerson
in 50 seconds to win at 141.
Richard Lohr
(13-13, 2-8) followed Hashimoto with a fall of his own, pinning Joe Vanaman in 2:53.
"Richard looked good today," said Maughan. "I really thought he was very sharp out there."
Lohr's victory made the score 29-0, following Hashimoto's pin, a
Blayze Bahe
(2-2, 2-2) technical fall (17-2) at 133 and
Tony Mustari
's forfeit win at 125.
Another Portland State (1-10) forfeit at 157 awarded a victory to
Luke Salazar
(Thornton) (11-3, 7-3), and two matches later
Chase Walker
(13-5, 1-3) picked up a major decision over
Brian Lemmon
in 174 to make the score 33-3.
Walker has recently moved up to the 174 class, after initially expecting to compete at 149.
"Chase is adjusted to his new weight class. He's healthy, and it looks like he's starting to wrestle well at that weight."
Calen Nicholl
(5-10, 1-6) picked up his first dual meet victory of the season with a 13-3 major decision over
Keena Washington
, and
Reece Hopkin
(12-4, 6-2) closed out the match by earning a fall in 3:37.
The Bears will now hit the road for a pair of Western Wrestling Conference duals against North Dakota State and South Dakota State. Maughan's father
Bucky
helms the North Dakota State program, and Jack will look to avenge a loss to the Bison last season when the teams meet on February 2.
