Getting Past the Stabbing

Remember the name Rafael Mendoza?

He's the former University of Northern Colorado kicker who was stabbed by his backup a little more than a year ago.

The Thornton native, as reported by Yellow Scene Magazine, is back playing football with an eye toward getting a shot at the NFL.

He has resurfaced, months after graduating, as the punter for the startup minor league football team, the Broomfield Dawgs. His agent has been in talks with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He'll square off against Katie Hnida, the former University of Colorado kicker at the center of the football program's sex and recruiting scandal, during a May 24 scrimmage that will see the Dawgs square off against league foe the Colorado Cobras.
