The soil report
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 6/14/2007

This Geology Technical information affects the preliminary design and layout of the development as well as the final engineering design. This information will be included as part of the specifications, which reflect on the contractor's approach to the construction and bid estimates.

The Earthwork Contractor is concerned with difficulty of excavation, bedrock, material reuse and groundwater. The Foundation Man is interested in bearing support and driving piles or drilling shafts and their depths.

The Geology Technical report organizes topics depending upon the nature of the project. The general description of the project and the geologic conditions of the neighborhood, as well as the drainage and facilities. Details of subsurface conditions determine, analysis and design evaluations formulate conclusions and recommendations. A map of the borings and the logs of subsurface profiles.

The land design team needs to be aware of the nature of subsurface conditions in the neighborhood. These conditions will have an impact on how and where specific features are constructed and will affect the design. The "Land Man" engineer relies upon the "Geologist's" expertise for such things as slopes in cut and fill areas, acceptability of soils, bearing capacity, and presence of high groundwater or shallow bedrock.
