Musings about life, love, dating, growing old, politics, and who knows what else. I will often rant about stupidity and the vagaries of the world.

Contains Nudity - TV ratings lie
Contributed by: David Isaacs   on 11/6/2007

I am talking about Dish Network here. The onscreen channel guide.

I am often presented with limited choices of movies that I might find interesting based on the limited description provided. If one movie has a G rating and an other has a more adult rating I will likely choose the adult content. Often I am reduced to selecting between them based on a nudity rating. I'm not ashamed to admit that given the option between watching a movie with nudity versus a movie without nudity I will choose the movie which offers nudity. Given the propensity of Hollywood to show nude women in the movies over the occasional backside of a nude man, there is little risk I will be disappointed by the gender of the nudity.

When that movie's nude content has been blurred or edited out, it really pisses me off. Especially at one o'clock in the morning. All the cable and satellite companies provide easy to use parental controls to block access to content which a parent feels is unsuitable. As such there is no need to "protect" adults from this content. Parents must accept the responsibility of controlling the content and viewing times of their children.

As a single adult man living alone I am offended by the constant censorship of content. It is false advertising. When you promise me nudity, by golly you better show me some!

Perhaps we could get them to expand the rating.
Instead of N for contains nudity (or maybe not)
How about:
NT = shows breast(s)
NA = shows bottom(s)
NTA = breast(s) & bottom(s)
NM = male nudity
NE = edited out
NB = blurred or blacked out

of course then we might end up with
NTAMBEDCGEF = breasts, bottoms, male, blurred and edited out, dogs, cats, giraffes, elephants, fish

kind of out of control, so then how about
N = may contain lots of nudity, all sexes, all parts

Then parents who wish to completely confuse their children can allow them to view blurred nudity. Then when asked, they could explain that when people are not married and they take off their clothes, this is what happens. What young girl would want her budding breasts to turn into a diffused blob. So much easier for those parents!

This country has too much of a hang-up over nudity anyway! As for the parents' wanting to take responsibility for setting the V-Chip in their TVs: Responsibility is a dying virtue.
