Blog Entry 103 of 181 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

What is education for?
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 7/16/2008

Education as it stands today in our public schools is for this end:

For our children to be able to read a paragraph, pick out the targeted sentence and think of the correct title for the piece.

For our children to be able to answer basic mathematical questions.

For our children to be able to write neatly in the spaces provided.

Also to be able to get the gist of a pre-cooked question and answer it.

To be able to fill in a bubble neatly with a pencil.

To be able to sit still and pay attention to that pencil, booklet and paper.

If they can't all do that, the school is a failure and shall be taken over by some undetermined government-sponsored entity.

It's a bonus if the child can read a book and even more of a bonus if they learn something to carry with them through life. But not required.

Go ahead and keep dreaming if you think education is for finding, say, a child who loves math and providing an environment for exploration of that. And then for children who aren't ready to delve into math, you can go ahead and fantasize about them playing with objects to compare and sort and divide without having to look at numbers until they're ready.

As for what undetermined government entity can take over our schools, I laugh at that. Really. What if they gave a CSAP and nobody showed up? What would they do, send in the National Guard?

Folks, we are frightened little people.

You will see little reaction to this because people are so trapped in being "Politically Correct" that they hide.
