Hey Peeps-
I don't know if you heard, but we had a bit of snow fall here in Denver the last couple days or so. Some have even referred to it as a "blizzard". I'm no Kathy Sabine, but from what I've witnessed at our house, it is in fact a blizzard.
Yesterday morning the whole house was quiet as I stirred. I knew instantly that school had been cancelled. Normally our house is a rat race of children running to and fro, doing their morning chores, fighting about the bathroom, and constantly reminding me that it's a good thing Billy's the morning person. As I walked downstairs to face the news, I told myself I had a choice.
"Lisa, you have a choice to make today. You can either enjoy this day. Enjoy the snow, the kids, the stopping of life and just being together. Or you can be annoyed that this day is going to be completely different than you planned, and make everyone around you miserable."
I pretty much chose #2, until I got far enough down the hall to Faith's room and saw that she was still in bed. She was just waking up, so I got in bed with her, since she's warm and small and it's easy to extract heat from her body. We put some music on and just cuddled.
Option 2 was no longer on the table and the day turned out fabulous. Except for a few minor details that I'm sure many others face when life brings storms. Literally.
We only had 3 chicken breasts to eat, and I felt that would not sustain us for long. Lucky for us, Billy works from home on these sorts of days so I begged him to take us to Costco before the roads were hideous.
The only other snag in the day was the Ugly Contest Billy and I were having. Unfortunately I won. It was close, though, but that's not saying much. Billy's been growing his hair out since May, so he's sort of in a constant awkward phase.
The great news of the storm was that my school was cancelled too! It is a much needed break for me, and I'm thrilled to use the extra time to make caramel corn and veg out with my kids.
We're on day 2 of this storm, and finally we got outside to see it up close. Getting the kids bundled only takes 4 hours, and all three pairs of their snow pants were too small. Plus Will didn't have any boots. I happen to be resourceful though, and got them bundled anyway. ( the solution: "kids just wear the pants that feel too tight, and the first one who complains goes inside" ) Before we walked a couple streets over to our friend's house, I said goodbye to Billy. This is when I realized the number one reason I generally don't like when he works from home: After a day of being together, he sort of let's down his "socially appropriate" guard, and makes bad choices. This time it was his wardrobe of long underwear. And nothing else.
I asked him to put some pants on, not only for us, but for little Kate who we were bringing home. Thankfully he did.
So that pretty much wraps up the blizzard of '09. I think we'll play some more Uno, and spend some time watching the Netflix movie that came in spite of the storm. I'm glad I chose to be grateful and see the blessings right in front of my face. Life is good.
Stay warm--
