Pam Pressel
and
Kathryn Arbour
, owners of Capabilities in Westminster, presented at the Joint Conference on Aging on March 10 in Chicago. ASA (American Society on Aging) and NCOA (National Council on Aging) sponsored the annual international conference, Let's Rethink Aging. Among the hundreds of sessions, Kathryn and Pam's presentation, Think Unlimited: The Transformation of Assistive Products and Services, focused on the product and service innovations growing from the influences of Boomers, turning 60 at the rate of 8,000 a day. As retailers of lifestyle products for health, comfort and independence, Kathryn and Pam have a unique window into the world of manufacturing and distribution of health related products and services.
Pam and Kathryn speak often throughout Denver on their experiences as entrepreneurs and on a host of health-related topics. In February, they presented at the In Good Company conference in downtown Denver, hosted by the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Small Business Adminstration. Their topic, Two Women's Journey: From Idea to Storefront, featured their own story as told by the team of professionals they engaged early in their process.
Phil Keenan
, attorney-at-law, and partner at Ambler-Keenan, LLC;
Thom Hanson
, CPA;
Esther Kettering
, VP at Fuller and Company; and
Jim Olp
of the Small Business Development Council in Denver offered practical tips for start-ups, using the Capabilities story to illustrate important lessons.
Capabilities, which opened in September 2005, provides 5,000 square feet of unique and practical products from mobility equipment and adapative tools for the everyday to fitness and strength training. There are lotions, teas, pillows and even a section with unique toys and ideas for kids. "Something for everyone," they say. The store's one-of-a-kind design encourages experimentation. There are four 12'x12' rooms inside the store, a kitchen, a bathroom, a living room and a bedroom, all outfitted with an array of products usuable at home. This approach offers many ideas of how to use the products and of just how much choice there is.
Capabilities also provides information about local resources who can help find solutions to numerous health-related issues. There is also a 500-square-foot conference room for use by anyone in search of meeting space. Pam and Kathryn sponsor free seminars and classes on a host of topics. You can find information about these events at
www.capabilities.com
.
Pam and Kathryn have plans to expand Capabilities to other Denver Metro locations later this year.They have also launched a new website (capabilities.com) where visitors can blog, add photos, post for sale or wanted items on a community bulletin board, and go shopping.
See for yourself what this local store is all about. It's located at 6805 W. 88th Avenue in Westminster.
