21 eighth graders at Silver Hills Middle School organized a trip to Crossroads at Northglenn, an assisted living facility, last Tuesday November 6th. Curious for the opportunity to chat with people of different generation, they shared their pets with the residents. Tim Baca, activities director, at the facility welcomed the phone call from Heather Soffel, an eighth grader tasked with finding a facility that would welcome them.
Residents and students introduced themselves; then those that brought their pets walked around and talked about their pets, showed off some tricks. After the initial introductions student and residents continued to mingle and get to know each other. Some played piano for the students, some shared cookies, all shared stories and made connections to each other. A plan to return is already in the works. A partnership between old and young has begun. As singer India Arie says in her song
A Better People,
"When old people talk with young people, they're a better people all around."
