The students in
Mrs. Madsen
's class at Standley Lake High School have been working on a project to improve our school. As one of the ninth graders in this school, I've been able to observe firsthand what they have been doing on this project.
In her class, these ninth graders decided to help out the school by replacing all the flags in every classroom. To do this, each student wrote three letters to different people in and around our community. The letters included how much a flag would cost or where to send the flag in case the person wanted to go out and purchase his or her own flag to send to the school.
There are many uses for flags in a school, but the most basic of them all is patriotism. The students respect their country and their school more when they say the Pledge of Allegiance, and when they look at the flag, it stirs their pride in their country. Most of the time, students who say the Pledge are more willing to work for their school and country, so replacing the old flags with fresh, crisp ones will definitely be an improvement for our school.
The class got many flags, not enough to replace all of them in the entire school, but the result was surprising. The ninth graders received 25 flags for the school. That means that $350 of the school's money won't be spent on flags, but can be used to further our learning environment in other ways! The students' letters where greeted with a flurry of red, white and blue. The people responded happily and many of them sent new flags or the money to purchase them for our school. Not only that, but more flags are still coming in. That's a lot of helpful people in our community.
The students took nearly two weeks to write, edit and send out the letters. The first step was a rough draft that included the price and location of where to send the flags (our school). After that,
Mrs. Weber
happily offered up a few days of her class time to edit and reformat the letters. Then, students brought them back to Mrs. Madsen's room with envelopes and stamps to be sent off through the mail.

I've left my mark on this school; it will help out by saving our school the money to buy an entire new set of flags in the future." He was proud and enthusiastic to help out in his freshman year.

That sounds like an awesome project, Stephen. I'm glad that so many people in the community were willing to help out.

This was a great story. I was glad to read that the students respect their school, country, and flag. I am glad to see the students working hard and the community backing them up. The teacher giving her time to assist is a wonderful teaming effort on the part of school. I am glad to read an inspirational story about student efforts in schools when all we seem to hear these days are sadness happening there.

I don't live in Colorado any more but I do have family there and enjoy my visits with them. I also find it humbling that the youth of today is moved to show support for our country, especially in all the turmoil that is going on. Stephen did a great job and is encouraging other students to be involved, support our country and set an example. Way to go.....
