Friday afternoon, November 18 marked the beginning of fall break for District 50 schools and more importantly ushered in an historic event at Shaw Heights Middle School at 88th Avenue just west of Lowell Boulevard.
The 16th Annual Shaw Heights Turkey Trot was received with great enthusiasm by the entire Shaw Heights community, including the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and the Southwest Adams Fire Department which has a firehouse across the street from the school.
The turkey trot is a 5-K event conducted by grade-level and monitored for safety by sheriff and fire district representatives for safety and encouragement purposes. Prizes were awarded after the event for fastest runners at each level. Gart Brothers on 92nd Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard donated gift certificates as door prizes and their participation was greatly appreciated.
The Shaw Heights Turkey Trot was started in 1990 by PE teacher, Carol Peters, who is now the principal at Hodgkins Middle School in District 50. Myla Shepherd, the principal of Shaw Heights Middle School, has enthusiastically continued the historic event and has enhanced the traditions that cement this event as a community gathering enjoyed by all.
