Twenty-two German students arrived in Denver on March 23. They stayed three weeks in the houses of Standley Lake High school students.
For twelve years, Standley Lake High school and the Comenius Gymnasium Deggendorf have taken part in the German American Partnership Program (GAPP). This organization takes people from different parts of the world and makes friendship that sometimes lasts a life time.
For six years,
Michael Pokorny
(Standley Lake's German teacher) and
Josef Irl
(a teacher from Comenius Gymnasium Deggendorf) have worked hard to make this program work. The exchange students were here to experience real American life by living with host families; they even went to school with their American partners. After the first day of school they get to pick their own classes. The German students got to experience many fun and new things while they were here. For example they went by bus to Santa Fe and Colorado Springs for a few days.
We all went down town and got to go to the top of the Qwest building and spend time at the 16th Street Mall. We also have taken group trips to Casa Bonita and the Grizzly Rose for some line dancing leasons. We had a fun-filled cosmic bowling night one evening. They took a day trip to Boulder and spent time on the Pearl Street Mall.
The German students also did some fun and adventurous things with their host families. Our last night together was spent at Heritage Square Opera House where we were all treated to a wonderful play. The cast even involved our teachers in the play. We all had a wonderful time.
Some of the German students were not ready to leave, but on April 13, time ran out and they had to leave. There were many tears and hugs and promises to stay in touch. In July, the American students will get to go to Deggendorf, Germany for five weeks. We will be staying in the homes of our new friends. We are all excited and can't wait.
What is to become of this great opportunity? The best time of our lives and, hopefully, life long buddies.
