Sand paintings, boxes, and ice cream!
Contributed by: Karen Dunn on 5/28/2006

WESTMINSTER -- Fairview Elementary, School District 50, Suzanne Werber's 4th grade class was an activity heaven May 5, 2006.

Three generations of teachers, Haleen Nelson, retired for 33 years, her daughter, Karen Dunn, retired five years, and Cherylin Peniston, retired two years, taught the 4th graders new creativity skills.

Ms. Nelson's lesson, a box from a greeting card, showed thinking "inside the box" is an extraordinary occurrence. With Ms. Peniston, as the assistant, the lesson was a great triumph. Cut the card in half, sliver down the bottom sides, a few snips, folds and the card has become a box.

Sand paints, using Indian designs, was a team teaching endeavor. Draw, trace the drawing with glue, sprinkle the sand, attach the design to the hollowed out tree frame for completion of incredibly unique art.

Ms. Dunn was in charge of ice cream. A recipe her grandfather used over a hundred years ago was the only expectable way to produce the tasty ice cream treat.

Fresh milk, condensed milk, cream, unflavored gelatin, an egg, sugar, kayo syrup, and vanilla were the ingredients. The students warily, tenderly, gently, placed ice and salt around the cylinder. Let the cranking begin!

Each student took a turn at the crank, until the crank would no longer revolve. The payment was a delicious ice cream delicacy, just like children of a hundred years ago enjoyed.

Three generations of teachers, one generation of students, and inventive activities was the perfect combination for creating a knowledge-gaining occasion at Fairview Elementary.
