Surely you have walked through the commons and saw a bunch of girls twirling flags in the cafeteria. The first question that probably came to your head was, "What are they doing?"
Well, that bunch of girls twirling flags is Standley Lake's Winter Guard. SLHS has had a winter guard for four years, and for three of those four years they have had instructor Aaron Moss as their director and coach.
On Saturday January 26 th the girls had their first competition at Lakewood which they took first place in.
This year the guard is made up of six members; sophomore captain Lyndsay Sparks, senior Hilary Stier, juniors Sarah Bell and Jenay Breden, and freshmen Holly Waren and Lindsey Ditch.
"Winter guard is just basically a way for color guard members to do color guard during the winter," said Bell.
Each year the Winder Guard put together a musical and dance performance featuring different choreography, and a combination of flag, sword, and rifle twirls. This year, the girl's performance features different
Prince songs.
The guard season goes from November to April and practices are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The girls have competition almost every Saturday until early April when their state competitions will be held at the Denver Coliseum.
Last year, the Winter Guard almost first in state until Douglass County took the lead at the last minutes.
"Because of that Douglass County is most likely going to be our biggest competition this year," said Moss. "I have high hopes for the girl this season though."
