School District 50 news

WESTMINSTER -- Morgan Brezall and Heather Pedrin, seniors in Ranum High School's IB program, have each been chosen to receive a $500 savings bond. The students were first place finalists in the EXPO Classroom Make-over Contest. They entered the contest last year and wrote a brief essay describing why their teacher deserved a classroom make-over. As part of this make-over, their teacher, Tina Falconer, will receive a projector and a Smart board for her classroom.

The students in Mrs. Strand's 4th grade class at Vista Grande Elementary School made holiday greeting cards for the residents of San Marino Retirement Community. The cards were personalized and each resident of the San Marino community received a card. Several students in Mrs. Strand's class commented how creating the holiday cards made them feel happy inside because they knew the cards were going to make someone smile.

Information:
At a work session prior to the December 12 board meeting, the Adams County School District 50 Board of Education was advised by Gerry Difford and Ron Mitchell, representatives with the Colorado Department of Education, that the district would be placed on academic watch.

The District's new superintendent Dr. Roberta Selleck stated, "This came at a very opportune time. This adds one more piece to the puzzle and along with the Comprehensive Appraisal for District Improvement, will work in concert with our strategic planning process." Since her arrival in July, Dr. Selleck has been focused on student achievement, facilities and budget. Voters recently approved a bond, which will afford the district the opportunity to address learning environments and facilities. "This is a great impetus for us to reinvent our district," Selleck concluded.

Board President Chuck Hensel views this as "an opportunity to learn best practices and to learn from other districts and teachers who have improved academically."

This is the first step in the state's three step process: Watch, Probation, and Loss of Accreditation. Currently there are five school districts in Colorado that are on Probation. To date no districts have lost accreditation. Adams 50 must show continuous academic improvement over the course of two to three years before the academic watch is removed.
