Each year the Westminster Optimist Club provides two $1,000 Scholarships to district 50 students. Students interested in earning the scholarships were interviewed by a panel of Optimist membrs. This year the scholarships were awarded to students in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. Winners of the scholarships were selected based on academic achievement in the classroom, leadership, citizenship and attendance. Recipients of the 2007 scholarships are Amy Lauryssa Garten, Westminster High School and Anabel Herrera, Ranum high School.
Amy Lauryssa Garten, daughter of Jodie and A. B. Garten (deceased), a student at Westminster High School has been on the honor roll and earned the Presidential Education Award. She was a member of the AVID progam, played Powder Puff and was in Drama Club. her interest outside of school are Warrior Run, baby sitting, cleaning and planting, theater, musicals amd art. She is a member of the Church of jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as an office in the Youth group. Amy plans to attend Adams State college to obtain a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. She hopes to open her own business entitled Details.
Anabel Herrera, daughter of Juan and Isabel Herrera, a student at Ranum High School, has been on the honor roll for 4 semesters. She was a member of the AVID program, captain of the varsity soccer team anda leader in LaRaza. Her interest outside of school are art, soccer, piano, scrapbooking and baseball. Anabel volunteers at church as a Sunday School Teacher and helping needy families. She also worked as a clerk in a small business. She has been a member of the A.S.T.R.O. Club and volunteered at the library and LAGF Gala. Anabel plans to attend Community College of Denver to obtain a degree in Business Administration.
