Since 1957, Optimist Clubs have recognized youth for their talents in the academics, arts, athletics and contributions to communities. The Westminster Optimist Youth Appreciation Day is held annually to honor outstanding youth in our area.
Representative students were chosen by high school staff members from Hidden Lake High School, Pinnacle Charter School, Ranum High School and Westminster High School. The students, along with their families, teachers and school sponsors, were invited to a breakfast meeting Dec. 4 at Ciancio's at Hyland Hills. The event was attended by family members, school personnel and Optiminst members. Each student received a certificate, a $50 savings bond and an engraved key chain.
Tiffany Kekumano,
daughter of
Gloria Segura and Sam Kekumano
, is a senior at Hidden Lake High School. She is an amazing student and a leader in the building. Her focus is on academics and art class. She is a member of the Discovery Program, a new program that teached students how to deal with emotional feelings, and it also promotes communication with teachers and staff. As a freshman at Westminster High School, she played in the band and orchestra. Tiffany has an interest in drama and enjoys playing guitar. Outside of school, she has an interest in working on cars. After graduation, Tiffany plans to attend Front Range College for basic studies and then to Metro College to pursue a program of writing and business.
Danny Acosta,
son of
Candelario Acosta,
is a senior at Pinnacle Charter High School. He was seleccted for this honor because he is an exceptional student. He is a hard worker and applies himself to all activities. In addition to being an outstanding student, Danny has an interest in theater, dance and drama. He has played the lead role in
MacBeth
and had a part in
Fools
. He enjoys volleyball and soccer. Over the years, he has earned many awards in middle school and high school, including being on the honor roll, Student of the Month, Outstanding Student and Certificate for Gang Resistance Education and Training. In 2003-2004, Danny earned a Perfect Attendance award. He also has a part-time job at the Golden Corral. After graduation, Danny plans to study psychology at CU.
Amanda Moua,
daughter of
Ly Yang and Vang Moua,
is a senior at Ranum High School. She is an outstanding student and her teachers nominated her for her good grades and leadership qualities. She belongs to the National Honor Society. She is a member of the International Baccalaureate program, which provides an excellent preparation for college. She is learning to speak Spanish and is studying Japanese and Korean on her own. She is also a member of the Anime Club, a multicultural art club in which she studies the Japanses culture. Amanda has served on the Prom Committee, has organized a hockey team at Ranum and enjoys basketball and volleyball outside of school. After graduation, Amanda would like to study business at UCD.
Oscar Barrera
,son of
Georgina Gallardo
, is a senior at Westminster High School. He is known for his optimistic, positive personallity and leadership qualities. In middle school, Oscar enjoyed playing flute and singing in the choir. He speaks three languages: Spanish, French and English. Oscar belongs to the Drama Club, Choir, the Ambassador Club, Migrant Youth Council, AVID and the Link program. He attended the Rotary Leadership Camp. He volunteers30 minutes, two days a week, as a receptionist at the Adams County School District 50 Administration Building. He served as a volunteer at the Parade of Lights. Oscar enjoys swimming and went to State last year. He also has managed a girls swim team. After graduation, Oscar plans to attend CU or New York University to study video and audio production.
