Free Japanese Doll Day Concert

Japanese Doll Day Celebration March 12th
The Colorado Folk Arts Council, the regions foremost cultural folk arts organization will enlighten the community about the cultural history of Hina Matsuri, Japanese Doll Day with a special tribute on March 12th at the Aurora Fox Theater , 9900 E. Colfax. From 12 noon until 1pm. Westminster storyteller Carl Ruby will highlight the event with a record setting fold and tell story session with over 250 paper boxes..
Cultural Concerts on Colfax, the metro areas largest and longest running multi-cultural, multi-collaborative cultural concert series is sponsored by CFAC and designed to enhance cultural understanding through the arts. The Hina Matsuri tribute is meant to celebrated Denver's Japanese communities many contributions by bringing for the first time ever Toni Yagami , Taiko Drummer and Carl Ruby, aka. Mr. Oragami together for a truly unique and delightful show.
Carl Ruby is one of the regions foremost storytellers and co-author of the famous "Holy Mole Tummy Tale Series". He has worked paper magic with his audiences all over the nation and has created the folding box tale. A true treat for all.He will showcase his talents with stories and folding over 200 apper boxes at this event. "Audience participation is required" he laughed.
Toni performs traditional songs to contemporary compositions and weaves folktales along with cultural facts. Her "Matsuri" performance entertains and educates. Dressed in traditional costume, using taiko drums, various hand percussion, bamboo flutes and the koto (Japanese harp), Toni will delight old and young alike.
The audience will be thrilled with stories about Japanese Doll day and get hands on experience folding origami Hina matsuri is an occasion to pray for young girls' growth and happiness. Most homes with girls display dolls for this Doll's Festival and dedicate to them peach blossoms. Hina matsuri is also called Momo no Sekku meaning festival of peach.Hina is ancient word meaning doll and matsuri means festival. Momo means peach and sekku is another word for festival..
The CFAC has been presenting cultural concerts at the Aurora Fox for over a decade. They pride themselves in the fact that this series has become a signature event for the region. "No where else in Colorado or in the four corners area can you find an event like this." Said Gehauf. "We have strived to present some really cutting edge cultural programs and have opened up a venue of quality to ethnic artist. We are very excited to have this type of show with such talented artist."
