Faces of Broomfield & Westminster page
, where YourHub.com staff and readers can introduce you to more people who make this part of the metro area what it is.
It's about 7 p.m. May 20 and actors and crew are trickling into the Gaslight Theatre for play rehearsal for
God's Favorite
. They chat before starting, talking about sets, what happened during the previous night's rehearsal and a mishmash of other topics.
Assistant director
Kelly Daugherty
strides in, casually dressed in a white T-shirt, shorts and holding a motorcycle helmet. The 26-year-old lives in Firestone and though the theater is far away in Westminster, the drive is "worth it" and "easier when you have a motorcycle," he says.
Once all the actors arrive, director
Jane Schoenradt Allard
tells everyone to start rehearsal. "Places! Places! Quiet on the stage, please," Daugherty yells.
The actors get into costume and rehearse a scene. Allard and Daugherty imitate an alarm to help the actors know their places. The main character, Joe, played by
Ed Schoenradt
, says a few lines and suddenly pauses.
"Line?" he asks.
Daugherty takes his cue, "Listen, someone ..." The prompt helps Schoenradt get back into character.
Throughout the rehearsal, Daugherty keeps his head down, eyes on the script, following along and stopping every once in a while to help the actors remember their lines or correct them for saying the wrong things.
Daugherty has spent 22 years in theater and has done everything from acting onstage to working behind the scenes, doing set design, lighting, costumes and, now, helping direct. He has done a lot of community and semi-professional theater. And working for a production at the Denver Center for Performing Arts?
"Someday," he says with a smile.
Daugherty says his mother encouraged him to take up theater in order to have experience on a stage and have more confidence and self-esteem to speak in public. As assistant director for the current production of
God's Favorite
, Daugherty's primary focus is to support the director and give feedback to the actors.
"I have to make sure that what I say and do uphold the director's vision," he says.
Additionally, Daugherty has to help train and develop the stage manager for this production. Since the Gaslight Theatre is community-based, actors and crew are volunteers and not professionals. Each person holds a full-time job and participates in this production in their off time.
During the day, Daugherty works in a medical billing office as the business office manager and overseeing a department of 25 people. So, supervising a crew is nothing new to him, he says.
The biggest challenge he faces working in community theater is finding resources and a budget for the production. Space also can be an issue for community-based theater, Daugherty says. But, Daugherty added a strong cast makes up for the challenges.
For the next two weeks of rehearsals, Daugherty will be in charge of doing the lights and sounds. Before the show, he says they'll be getting two volunteers to help him with operations so he can focus on assisting Schoenradt in directing the play.
God's Favorite
will premiere at the Gaslight Theatre on May 30 and will run weekends through June 21. The Gaslight Theatre is a nonprofit that formally came together in January. It is located at 7297 Lowell Blvd. in Westminster.
