During this year's
Great-West Life Bike MS, Colorado's Ride 2008
presented by Sam's Club, 3,100 participated, including cyclists from Spain and Germany, to raise funds that support programs, services and research for the
Colorado Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.
This marked the 23rd year that the 150-mile ride has been held.
The two-day ride followed a course from
Front Range Community College
in Westminster to Colorado State University and back and has a goal of raising $2.9 million. Although final numbers won't be available for several weeks as donations continue to come in, more than $2 million had already been received by the start of the ride. "We are always very encouraged by and grateful for the generosity of the Colorado community," said Carrie Nolan, president, Colorado Chapter, National MS Society.
"Although we have reached capacity for the number of riders, the amount raised each year continues to grow due to the commitment of participants to find a cure for this disease," said Nolan. She also attributes increased giving to friendly team competition. This year 195 teams participated, with teams

RawHinies,
Stay Fit at Hyatt,
Sugar Bees
and
Venoco
each vying to be the top fund-raising team of the 2008 ride. Together these five teams have raised more than $400,000 to date.
"Our event has remained successful because our riders know it is well planned and safe and riders are supported along every mile of the course," said Nolan. "It's also a fun and social time for many."
This was echoed by many, including team North Highland, an IT management and consulting company. "We had a great time and enjoyed it a lot," said team rider Kristen Giacchino, one of the 11 riders on her team. "The ride supports a great cause and we ride for a mom, a client and a friend. The training rides organized by our team captain Ann Coatney also promote camaraderie since we work at different client sites," she added.
Not all participants rode solo. Two members of team Schlumberger did the ride on a tandem bike for the first time. David Ratcliff did the double century last year, but decided to ride with his 12-year-old daughter Haley this year. Both enjoyed the experience and rode to support John Duong, a cousin in California who has MS.
"The ride is very uplifting and a time to come together and move for those who can't. Thanks to these dedicated and committed people, we will ultimately cure this disease," Nolan emphasized.
