Dec. 2, Westminster, CO - Santa arrived on a Westminster fire truck to visit some good boys and girls Sunday night, the first evening of a week-long program that has been a Westminster Fire Department tradition for over 70 years.
The Santa program was started in 1936 by the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department. The tradition lives on with current professional firefighters, retired volunteers, and community members all giving of their time to play Santa, elf, or driver to bring some holiday cheer to local families. The program is very popular, the requests far outweigh how many visits the volunteers can make. Residents enter a lottery and about 240 lucky families receive an evening with Santa between Dec. 2 -7. Each night four different Santa volunteer teams visit up to ten homes each.
"There is nothing like watching kids' faces when Santa drives up in a fire truck with lights and sirens going," said firefighter Kelly Alvis, one of the drivers on Sunday night. Santa visits with children, asking if they have been good and what they want for Christmas, and leaves them with a stocking of candy to kick-off the Christmas season.
Though there is no charge for the program, some families give holiday treats or small gifts in appreciation. Any monetary donations are allocated to the Westminster Firefighters' Fire Victims Benefit Fund, a non-profit that provides immediate financial relief to Westminster citizens that are displaced from their homes due to fire.

Fantastic to hear that Santa is still making his annual pre-Christmas trip to Westminster to hear what the boys and girls are wanting for their gifts. Santa made many children and adults alike very happy with his famous exit on the fire trucks over the years with the lights flashing and the siren blaring. We especially enjoy seeing the vintage firetruck with Santa on board - wished I would have had a camera. This is a terrific program!
